Southern Fried Salmon Patties

Posted on January 31, 2025

Southern Fried Salmon Patties are a beloved comfort food, bringing a crispy, golden-brown crust with a tender, flavorful center. This classic dish is a staple in many Southern kitchens, often served with creamy grits, coleslaw, or a side of cornbread.

Ingredients

  • 1 (14.75 oz) can pink salmon, drained and flaked (or 2 cups cooked fresh salmon)
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise (optional for extra moisture)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (optional for a kick)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped green onions or parsley (optional)
  • 2 tbsp milk (if needed for consistency)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Instructions

    1. Prepare the Salmon
      • If using canned salmon, remove any large bones and skin, then flake the meat with a fork.
      • If using fresh salmon, cook and flake it before mixing.
    2. Mix the Ingredients
      • In a large bowl, combine the salmon, chopped onion, cornmeal, flour, egg, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and green onions or parsley.
      • Stir well, adding a little milk if the mixture is too dry to form patties.
    3. Shape the Patties
      • Form the mixture into small patties, about 2-3 inches in diameter.
      • Place them on a plate and let them rest for a few minutes to firm up.
    4. Fry the Patties
      • In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until shimmering.
      • Carefully place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
      • Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
    5. Serve and Enjoy
      • Serve hot with tartar sauce, remoulade, or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
      • Pair with grits, a fresh salad, or your favorite Southern sides.

Tips for the Best Salmon Patties

    • Let the patties chill in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before frying to help them hold their shape.
    • For extra crunch, coat the patties lightly in additional cornmeal before frying.
    • If you like a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mix.

Enjoy these crispy, flavorful salmon patties as a nostalgic taste of the South!
