Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Posted on November 30, 2024

Salisbury steak is a comforting classic, combining juicy, seasoned beef patties with a rich onion gravy. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or a cozy weekend meal, this dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onion
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Salisbury Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined (avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender).
  2. Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and almost cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 6-8 minutes until softened and golden brown.
  2. Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  3. Add the cornstarch slurry to the skillet, stirring constantly to thicken the gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3: Combine and Simmer

  1. Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy over the top.
  2. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes, ensuring the steaks are fully cooked and infused with the gravy.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Serve the steaks with a generous helping of onion gravy.
    • Pair with creamy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or steamed rice.
    • Add a side of green beans or roasted carrots for a complete meal.
