Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

Buttermilk biscuits are a staple in Southern cooking and are perfect for breakfast, dinner, or anytime in between. Light, flaky, and buttery, these biscuits have a tender crumb that pairs beautifully with butter, jam, or gravy. Whether you’re serving them with a hearty meal or enjoying them fresh out of the oven, nothing beats a warm homemade biscuit.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • ¾ cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the Butter
Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  4. Add the Buttermilk
Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir with a fork just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Form the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat it into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Fold the dough in half, rotate, and repeat this folding process 2-3 times to create layers. Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness.
  6. Cut Biscuits
Using a 2.5-inch biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather any scraps, gently reshape the dough, and cut out additional biscuits.
  7. Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  8. Brush with Butter
Remove the biscuits from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter. Serve warm.
