Freezing tangerines

Posted on July 15, 2024

Freezing tangerines can be a great way to preserve their freshness and enjoy them year-round. Here’s how you can do it:

Preparation:

  1. Select Fresh Tangerines: Choose tangerines that are ripe and free of blemishes.
  2. Wash and Peel: Wash the tangerines thoroughly under running water. Peel them and separate the segments.
  3. Remove Seeds: If the tangerine segments have seeds, remove them.

Methods:

You can freeze tangerines in two ways: as whole segments or as a puree.

Freezing Segments:

  1. Pre-Freeze (Optional): Spread the tangerine segments on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure the segments do not touch each other to avoid sticking together. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for a few hours until the segments are solid.
  2. Store: Transfer the frozen segments into a freezer-safe bag or container. Remove as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn. Label the bag with the date.

Freezing Puree:

  1. Blend: Place the tangerine segments in a blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Portion: Pour the puree into ice cube trays or silicone molds for easy portioning.
  3. Pre-Freeze: Freeze the trays until the puree is solid.
  4. Store: Transfer the frozen puree cubes to a freezer-safe bag or container. Label with the date.

Usage:

When you’re ready to use the frozen tangerines, you can enjoy them straight from the freezer as a refreshing treat, or thaw them in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Frozen segments can be added to smoothies, while the puree can be used in sauces, desserts, or beverages.

Tips:

  • Use freezer bags or containers that are specifically designed for freezing to ensure the best quality.
  • Consider adding a bit of sugar to the puree if you prefer a sweeter taste, but this is optional.
  • For the best flavor and texture, use the frozen tangerines within 6 to 12 months.
