🍩 Easy Sourdough Donuts Recipe
Ingredients
-
1 cup active sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
-
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
-
½ cup milk, lukewarm
-
¼ cup sugar
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
-
1 egg
-
½ tsp salt
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
Optional Coatings:
-
Cinnamon sugar
-
Powdered sugar
-
Glaze (powdered sugar + milk + vanilla)
Instructions
-
Mix the Dough
-
In a mixing bowl, combine sourdough starter, milk, sugar, butter, egg, salt, and vanilla.
-
Gradually add flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
-
-
Knead and Rise
-
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise at room temperature for 3–4 hours (or overnight in the fridge) until doubled in size.
-
-
Shape the Donuts
-
Roll the dough to about ½-inch thickness.
-
Cut out donuts with a donut cutter (or use a large and small round cutter for rings).
-
Place cut donuts on a floured tray, cover, and let them rest for 30–45 minutes until slightly puffy.
-
-
Fry the Donuts
-
Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pan.
-
Fry donuts in batches, about 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
-
Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
-
-
Coat & Serve
-
While still warm, toss donuts in cinnamon sugar, dust with powdered sugar, or dip in glaze.
-
Tips
-
If you want extra fluffy donuts, let the shaped donuts proof longer until very airy.
-
For a healthier version, you can air-fry or bake them at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes, then glaze.
-
Use leftover sourdough starter discard for a mild tang, or active starter for a stronger rise.
