Chicken Cordon Bleu

Chicken Cordon Bleu is a classic French-inspired dish that’s elegant yet simple. This recipe combines tender chicken breasts, savory ham, and melted Swiss cheese, all wrapped up in a crispy, golden breadcrumb coating. Serve with a side of vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Flatten the chicken breasts by placing them between two sheets of plastic wrap and pounding them to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Layer the Ham and Cheese:
    • Place a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast. Fold the chicken over the ham and cheese, tucking the edges if necessary to create a neat roll.
  3. Coat the Chicken:
    • Secure the chicken rolls with toothpicks if needed.
    • Set up three bowls: one with flour (seasoned with salt and pepper), one with beaten eggs mixed with Dijon mustard (optional), and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder.
    • Dredge each chicken roll first in flour, then dip in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
  4. Cook the Chicken:
    • Heat olive oil or butter in an ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
    • Sear the chicken rolls on all sides until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes.
    • Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  5. Serve:
    • Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with your favorite side dish, like mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a light salad.
