Buttermilk Sweet Potato Pie

Posted on August 24, 2024 by Musa

Buttermilk Sweet Potato Pie is a delightful twist on the classic sweet potato pie, combining the creamy richness of buttermilk with the natural sweetness of roasted sweet potatoes. Here’s a recipe to make this Southern-inspired dessert:

Ingredients:

  • 1 unbaked pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 1/2 cups mashed)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Pierce the sweet potatoes with a fork and place them on a baking sheet.
    • Roast for about 45 minutes to an hour, until they are very tender.
    • Allow them to cool slightly, then peel and mash until smooth. You should have about 1 1/2 cups of mashed sweet potatoes.
  2. Prepare the Pie Filling:
    • Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes and melted butter. Stir until smooth.
    • Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and mix well.
    • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until fully incorporated.
    • Gradually mix in the buttermilk, followed by the vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (if using), and salt.
    • Mix until the filling is smooth and well combined.
  3. Assemble the Pie:
    • Pour the sweet potato filling into the prepared pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.
    • Place the pie on the middle rack of the preheated oven.
  4. Bake the Pie:
    • Bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until the filling is set and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • If the crust begins to brown too much before the filling is done, you can cover the edges with aluminum foil.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing. This will help the filling set properly.
    • Serve at room temperature or chilled, with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

Enjoy!

This Buttermilk Sweet Potato Pie has a creamy, tangy depth of flavor from the buttermilk that perfectly complements the earthy sweetness of the sweet potatoes. It’s a comforting and delicious dessert that’s sure to impress!
