🍎 Amish Apple Fritters Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Fritters:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)

  • 2 large eggs

  • ¾ cup whole milk

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 cups peeled and finely chopped apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Glaze:

  • 1½ cups powdered sugar

  • 3–4 tbsp milk

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
Add wet ingredients to dry and mix just until combined (do not overmix).
    Fold in the chopped apples.

  2. Heat the Oil:
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed pan to 350°F (175°C).

  3. Fry the Fritters:
Carefully drop heaping tablespoons of batter into the hot oil, a few at a time.
Fry 2–3 minutes per side, or until deep golden brown and cooked through.
Use a slotted spoon to remove and drain on paper towels.

  4. Glaze:
In a bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
Dip warm fritters into the glaze or drizzle it over the top.

  5. Cool & Serve:
Let glaze set slightly before serving. Best enjoyed warm!

🔁 Tips:

  • If the fritters are browning too quickly, reduce the oil temperature slightly.

  • You can dust with cinnamon-sugar instead of glazing for a rustic touch.

  • For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
