Classic Barbecue Ribs Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Ribs:

  • 2 racks of baby back ribs (about 3 pounds each)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

For the Barbecue Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ribs:
    • Begin by removing the thin membrane from the back of each rack of ribs. Use a knife to gently lift the membrane at one end and pull it off, using a paper towel for a better grip.
    • Pat the ribs dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning adhere better.
  2. Season the Ribs:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using.
    • Rub the spice mixture all over the ribs, ensuring an even coating on both sides. Allow the ribs to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  3. Prepare the Barbecue Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat and let it simmer gently for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Cook the Ribs:
    • Oven Method:
      • Preheat your oven to 275°F (135°C).
      • Place the ribs on a large sheet of aluminum foil. Drizzle with olive oil and wrap the ribs tightly in the foil. Place the foil-wrapped ribs on a baking sheet.
      • Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until the ribs are tender and the meat easily pulls away from the bone. Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and discard any excess fat or juices.
    • Grill Method:
      • Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350°F or 175°C).
      • Set up for indirect grilling by turning on one side of the grill and leaving the other side off.
      • Place the ribs on the cool side of the grill (the side with no direct heat) and cover. Grill the ribs for 2.5 to 3 hours, turning occasionally, until tender.
  5. Finish the Ribs:
    • Preheat your grill or broiler to high.
    • Brush a generous amount of barbecue sauce onto the ribs. Place them on the hot grill or under the broiler, cooking for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until the sauce is caramelized and bubbly.
    • Remove the ribs from the grill or broiler and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  6. Serve:
    • Cut the ribs between the bones and serve with extra barbecue sauce on the side. Enjoy with classic sides like coleslaw, cornbread, or baked beans.

This recipe delivers tender, flavorful ribs with a perfect balance of smoky, sweet, and tangy flavors. Whether you’re grilling for a summer barbecue or cooking in the oven for a cozy dinner, these ribs are sure to impress.
