Homemade carne asada tortas

A carne asada torta is a classic Mexican sandwich packed with juicy, marinated grilled steak, fresh toppings, and a toasted bolillo roll. . It’s a satisfying meal that balances smoky, savory flavors with creamy avocado, zesty pickled jalapeños, and crisp lettuce.

Ingredients

For the Carne Asada:

  • 1 lb skirt steak (or flank steak)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Torta:

  • 4 bolillo or telera rolls (split)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for toasting the bread)
  • 1 avocado (mashed with a pinch of salt)
  • ½ cup refried beans (warm)
  • ½ cup shredded lettuce
  • ½ cup sliced tomatoes
  • ¼ cup pickled jalapeños
  • ¼ cup crumbled queso fresco (optional)
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • Hot sauce (optional)
  • Instructions

    Step 1: Marinate the Carne Asada

    1. In a bowl, mix garlic, olive oil, lime juice, orange juice, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and all the spices.
    2. Place the steak in a shallow dish or zip-top bag and pour the marinade over it.
    3. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours) in the refrigerator.

    Step 2: Cook the Steak

    1. Heat a grill or cast-iron skillet over high heat.
    2. Cook the steak for 3-5 minutes per side, or until it reaches your desired doneness.
    3. Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain.

    Step 3: Prepare the Bread

    1. Spread butter on the cut sides of the bolillo rolls and toast them on a skillet until golden brown.

    Step 4: Assemble the Torta

    1. Spread refried beans on one side of the toasted bread and mashed avocado on the other.
    2. Layer the sliced carne asada over the beans.
    3. Add lettuce, tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, and queso fresco if using.
    4. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the top half of the roll.
    5. Drizzle with hot sauce if desired.

    Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

    • Close the sandwich, press down slightly, and cut in half.
