Homemade Flour Tortillas

There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh, homemade flour tortillas! Soft, warm, and slightly chewy, they elevate any dish, from tacos to burritos or even as a side to your favorite soups and stews.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add Oil and Water: Gradually mix in the oil (or melted butter) and warm water until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Rest the Dough: Cover with a damp towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This helps make the tortillas more pliable.
  5. Divide and Roll: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten and roll out into a thin, round tortilla (about 6-8 inches in diameter).
  6. Cook the Tortillas: Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30-45 seconds per side until lightly browned and puffy.
  7. Keep Warm and Serve: Place cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft and warm. Enjoy immediately or store for later!

Tips for the Best Tortillas:

  • Use warm water to help the dough come together smoothly.
  • Don’t overcook the tortillas; they should be soft and flexible.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat them in a pan or microwave before serving.
