Homemade Blueberry Donuts

Yields: 12 donuts

Ingredients

For the Donuts:
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
  • ⅔ cup (160ml) milk (or buttermilk for extra tenderness)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (60ml) melted butter (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (if frozen, do not thaw)
For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (adjust for consistency)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup mashed blueberries (for a natural purple color)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Batter

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) if baking, or heat oil to 350°F (175°C) if frying.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, mix milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
  4. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined (do not overmix!).
  5. Carefully fold in blueberries, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

2. Baking Method (Healthier Option)

  1. Grease a donut pan and spoon or pipe the batter into the molds, filling about ¾ full.
  2. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  3. Let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

3. Frying Method (Classic & Crispy)

  1. Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Scoop and roll dough into small balls (if making donut holes) or roll and cut out classic donut shapes.
  3. Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

4. Make the Glaze

  1. Mash blueberries and strain for a smooth texture (or leave bits for a rustic look).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, mashed blueberries, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  3. Dip each cooled donut into the glaze and let it set for 5 minutes.

Enjoy!

Serve immediately for the best texture—soft, fluffy inside with a slightly crisp outer layer. These blueberry donuts pair perfectly with coffee or tea! ☕🍩
