Meat Sauce

There’s something so comforting about a rich, hearty meat sauce simmering away on the stove. This classic meat sauce is versatile, perfect for spaghetti, lasagna, or any pasta dish you love. It’s easy to make, loaded with ground beef, tomatoes, and Italian herbs, and is sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground pork for variation)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ cup water or red wine (for richness)
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Meat: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Add chopped onion and cook for about 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
  3. Add Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add sugar (if using), oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Simmer: Add water (or wine) and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it cook for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the deeper the flavors.
  5. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt, pepper, or herbs if needed.
  6. Serve: Serve over your favorite pasta or use it in lasagna. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.

Enjoy this sauce with a side of garlic bread and a green salad for a complete meal!
