Gluten free Fried Onion Rings

Onion rings are a classic side dish or snack, loved for their crispy exterior and tender, sweet interior. For those following a gluten-free diet, this version ensures all the crunch and flavor without the gluten. These gluten-free fried onion rings are coated in a light, seasoned batter that crisps up beautifully when fried.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch thick rings
  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup sparkling water (or cold club soda)
  • 1 egg (optional, for extra richness)
  • Gluten-free breadcrumbs (optional, for extra crunch)
  • Oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onion Rings: Slice onions into rings and separate them. Set them aside.
  2. Make the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add the sparkling water (and egg if using) to the dry ingredients, mixing until you have a smooth, thick batter. If the batter feels too thick, add a little more water.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil over medium heat (about 350°F or 180°C). You’ll need enough oil to submerge the onion rings.
  4. Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it’s fully coated. If you want extra crunch, dip the coated ring in gluten-free breadcrumbs after the batter.
  5. Fry the Onion Rings: Fry the rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve Hot: Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!
  8. For an extra kick, sprinkle a little cayenne pepper or smoked paprika into the batter. Keep your oil at a steady temperature to ensure even frying!
