Pirim Doce is a cherished Goan dessert made with rice and coconut, known for its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and subtle sweetness. Traditionally served during celebrations and festivals, this dessert captures the essence of Goan culinary heritage. Here’s how to make this coconut-rich dessert at home.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice (ideally, soaked for 4-6 hours)
- 1 cup grated coconut (fresh is best)
- 1 ½ cups jaggery (or palm sugar), grated
- 1 ½ cups coconut milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- Ghee (for greasing)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Rice and Coconut Mixture:
- Drain the soaked rice and grind it with the grated coconut, adding a small amount of coconut milk to form a smooth, thick paste.
- Combine the Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the rice-coconut paste, remaining coconut milk, grated jaggery, salt, and cardamom powder. Stir well until the jaggery dissolves completely.
- Cook the Mixture:
- Pour the mixture into a deep, thick-bottomed pan. Cook on low to medium heat, stirring continuously to prevent sticking, for about 20–25 minutes, or until it thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Set the Pirim Doce:
- Grease a tray or plate with ghee and pour the cooked mixture onto it. Smooth the surface with a spatula and allow it to cool completely.
- Slice and Serve:
- Once set, cut the Pirim Doce into desired shapes, like squares or diamonds. Enjoy as a treat or offer during celebrations!
This delicious Pirim Doce is best enjoyed fresh, showcasing the beautiful flavors of coconut and jaggery. It’s a taste of Goa in every bite!
