Huaraches con Carne Asada is a beloved Mexican dish known for its heartiness and layered flavors. The masa base, shaped like the sole of a sandal (hence the name “huarache”), provides a comforting foundation for the tender, juicy carne asada and vibrant toppings.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1 ¼ cups warm water
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 lb carne asada (grilled, seasoned beef)
- Refried beans (black or pinto, your choice)
- Lettuce, shredded
- Queso fresco, crumbled
- Salsa verde or roja
- Avocado slices
- Lime wedges
- Cilantro, chopped (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the masa: In a large bowl, mix the masa harina, salt, and warm water until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a bit more water; if too sticky, add a bit more masa harina.
- Shape the huaraches: Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into an oval shape about ¼ inch thick using your hands or a tortilla press. The ovals should be about 6–7 inches long.
- Cook the huaraches: Heat a large, lightly greased skillet or comal over medium heat. Cook the huaraches for 2–3 minutes on each side until lightly browned and cooked through. Set aside.
- Prepare the carne asada: Season the carne asada with salt, pepper, garlic, cumin, and lime juice. Grill or cook it on a hot skillet until desired doneness. Slice into thin strips.
- Assemble the huaraches: Spread a thin layer of refried beans over each cooked huarache. Top with slices of carne asada, shredded lettuce, crumbled queso fresco, salsa, and avocado slices. Garnish with cilantro if desired.
- Serve: Serve the huaraches with lime wedges and additional salsa for extra flavor.
