Making homemade ketchup is a fun and delicious way to enjoy a classic condiment with a personalized touch. Here’s a simple recipe to get you started:

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients:
    • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), and water. Stir until well blended.
  2. Add Spices:
    • Add the salt, onion powder, garlic powder, allspice, cloves, cinnamon, mustard powder, and black pepper to the mixture. Stir until all the spices are evenly distributed.
  3. Simmer:
    • Pour the mixture into a saucepan and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps the flavors to meld together and thickens the ketchup slightly.
  4. Cool and Store:
    • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the ketchup cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it to a glass jar or an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator.
  5. Enjoy:
    • Your homemade ketchup can be used just like store-bought ketchup. Enjoy it on burgers, fries, and any other dishes where you love ketchup!

Tips:

  • Adjust the sweetness and spices according to your taste preference.
  • For a smoother texture, you can blend the ketchup after cooking using an immersion blender or a regular blender.
